  1. Friday, April 3, 1992. Thinking of renting or buying an Apple Powerbook? If so, you should download this chat. It is chock full of useful information, tips, and a phone number which could help you locate a protective case for spare batteries!

  3. This is lively and comprehensive chat about the Apple Powerbooks-- batteries, battery cases, travel cases, fax use, troubleshooting, rentals, etc.

  7. Jim MSP   : I've rented one, and borrowed one for a couple of 
  8.             trips.  Liked it a lot.

  12. StevenM47 : Gar, when you get you PB, you'll receive ARAP 
  13.             (appletalk Remote Access)

  15. StevenM47 : You can make your PB think the IIX is a network

  19. Jim MSP   : I used both a 140 and a 170. Easy.

  21. FarReacher: I hear the 140 is about the best bet now, for 
  22.             reliability and ease of use...Is that true?

  24. Jim MSP   : For the price, I think the 140 is the best value.
  25.  
  26. FarReacher: Jim, yes, but I hear PB 170 has some problems 
  27.             w/heavy-duty screen pixels
  28.  
  29. Jim MSP   : I had no problems. But only had it for 10 days.

  31. GAR1962   : Don't scare me about problems. I have 3,000 miles to 
  32.             travel in the next few months I cannot afford problems 
  33.             writing dissertation
  34.  
  35. Clay2     : I've heard the same rumour about the 170, but never 
  36.             specifically what the problem is?? (screen)

  38. FarReacher: Ok..maybe it was in early ship...pixels that burn out, 
  39.             apple w/not replace, unless you have 5 out or more
  40.  
  41. StevenM47 : I've had them since rollout.  They are great!!!

  43. GAR1962   : The April issue of Macuser had some great tips on the 
  44.             Powerbooks
  45.  
  46. FarReacher: Steve...tell us more, since you are supporting so 
  47.             many PBs.

  49. StevenM47 : What do you want to know?  I'll tell just about 
  50.             anything.

  52. Jim MSP   : The only thing I did not like on the 170 was the 
  53.             battery life - too short at 2 hrs at full power.
  54.  
  55. StevenM47 : The screen dimmer helps a lot!  Also, turn battery 
  56.             saver on. (Default)

  58. FarReacher: Jim, I think there are some power saver inits for the 
  59.             PB in the library now...have you checked
  60.  
  61. Jim MSP   : No, have not checked.

  63. GAR1962   : Which Library ?

  65. FarReacher: well, try keyword power saver in the main software 
  66.             library or, keyword power book

  68. Jim MSP   : Next time I rent, I'll look and try one.

  73.             area?

  75. Jim MSP   : I found a 140 for 180 for 10 days--GE rents

  77. StevenM47 : Not a bad deal.  You should check into lease w/ 
  78.             option to buy from GE.

  80. FarReacher: Not bad...what was on it when you rented, re: 
  81.             software?

  83. Jim MSP   : System 7.01, and Disinfectant. I may buy later this year.       
  84.             But rental is cost effective for me now on infrequent 
  85.             long trips

  90. StevenM47 : I haven't noticed.  I "borrow" one of our PBs every 
  91.             weekend.  Haven't passed out yet

  95. FarReacher: Jim MSP---what did you run on the PB 140?

  97. Jim MSP   : I ran Word 4.0 and Excel 3.0 - no problems.

  99. StevenM47 : Did you hook up to a printer?  What model if yes

  101. Jim MSP   : No printer hookup - that did bug me.

  103. FarReacher: Steven, good question...anyone used a printer in 
  104.             direct hookup to a PB?

  108. FarReacher: Jim...there is no hookup on PB 140, or did not come 
  109.             w/rental?

  111. Erich     : Yep, no problems printing on a LaserWriter      
  112.             IIg/LS/PNT/QMS410 Erich and the stylewriter.

  114. Jim MSP   : I was in Japan on both trips - did not bring any 
  115.             cables for any printers. I had access to HP laserprinters 
  116.             only.

  118. StevenM47 : Hope you had a spare battery for the flight.

  120. Jim MSP   : No spare battery - also in short supply.

  122. StevenM47 : Erich, any compat. problems?

  124. Erich     : No,  Hey!!!,  Apple released a 1-800 number to get 
  125.             protective cases for batteries. Let me see if I can find 
  126.             the Number...

  128. FarReacher: Ok, Erich...that would be useful.

  132. Erich     : Free protective cases for the battery packs,  when 
  133.             they're out of the PB the connections could lead to fires,  
  134.             if the contacts are inadvertently shorted by metal.  Paper 
  135.             clip, keys or such...

  137. StevenM47 : Erich, TRUST ME!  Do NOT hold onto the paper clip if 
  138.             you're going to try to short the battery!!!

  148. StevenM47 : Our sales reps have them  They track their calls with 
  149.             them, connect to home office, email...the works!

  151. FarReacher: Steven...how can you support them w/out having one of 
  152.             your own?

  154. StevenM47 : Sharp mind and keen memory.  We have spares in house 
  155.             that run thru' our hands from time to time.

  161. StevenM47 : A large pharmaceutical company.  Can't really say due 
  162.             to possible competitors.

  165.             pricing, specs, product info, etc ?

  167. Crythril  : OK. I just went in the other direction. Got a Si

  169. Crythril  : I've heard that there have been a lot of complaints 
  170.             about breakage. How durable have you found PBs to be?
  171.  
  172. StevenM47 : Not really, it's a joint venture between IS and 
  173.             Sales.  No one group truly has jurisdiction
  174.  
  175. FarReacher: Clay2, what is your interest tonight? Have any 
  176.             questions about PBs?

  178. Clay2     : FarReacher--Just taking in the info.  I'm considering 
  179.             purchasing a 170...programming.

  181. FarReacher: ok, Jim/Steve, can one of you answer Crythril's question
  182.  
  183. StevenM47 : PB's are sturdy unless they drop off a desk or slam 
  184.             into a skidding car's dashboard.

  186. StevenM47 : We've had some problems with shipping the PB in 
  187.             apple's original boxes. They now have service boxes which 
  188.             are GREAT!
  189.  
  190. GAR1962   : MacUser recommends a good case in the April (2 issue 
  191.             of Macuser

  193. Clay2     : I'm becoming concerned about durability.  I've seen 
  194.             comments on screen problems--will warranty cover ?
  195.  
  196. Jim MSP   : I never dropped one , but no problems. Seem sturdy. 
  197.             Had no problems to Japan and back. Carted around daily.

  199. FarReacher: w/about the door on back, heard it breaks off...
  200.  
  201. StevenM47 : With some abuse it does, but they're cheap 
  202.             replacements. Out of 120 reps in 4 months, we've only had 
  203.             10 PBS swapped due to problems.

  205. StevenM47 : The back doors, I don't have a number for but I 
  206.             believe we bought a bunch (~50) with pocket change.
  207.  
  208. Crythril  : They seems very sturdy. but I can be clumsy at times.

  210. FarReacher: Steven, re: service boxes and "cheap replacements" 
  211.             can you elaborate?

  213. StevenM47 : 6 were early shipment PBs. The boxes are straight from 
  214.             Apple.  You have to have a service contract with them to 
  215.             get a hold of any.

  217. Jim MSP   : Crythril - My GE rental unit was shipped via Fed X - 
  218.             and it arrived and worked A-OK.

  220. GAR1962   : No cases for the batteries when you buy them?
  221.  
  222. Clay2     : How can you get a larger hard drive in a PB, short of 
  223.             replacing one after purchase??
  224.  
  225. StevenM47 : We're testing a PB 170 with an 80 meg HD right now.  
  226.             Works great.  It's going to Seattle next Monday

  228. Jim MSP   : My dealer in Minneapolis, Hagen, will replace a disk 
  229.             on purchase.

  231. GAR1962   : The modem fax is poor on the 170 consider replacing 
  232.             it with the one recommended by MacUser.

  234. FarReacher: Steven, is the 80 meg HD an internal, or external?
  235.  
  236. Erich     : I don't plan to, that is what the note from Apple Reads
  237.             FWB has the 80mb, they will also have 120mb drives 
  238.             soon.

  240. StevenM47 : We haven't tried the Fax side, but the modems are 
  241.             very reliable so far with us.

  243. GAR1962   : Who sells the 80 drive?

  253. Erich     : They are a VERY good HD manufacturer for the Macintosh 
  254.             hard drives. They also have an encloser for the old 40mb 
  255.            for $199

  449.             I'll bet. I've not gotten a eval unit for PSI, but..

  483.             very hi-freq hearing.... My dog notices it too..)

  486.             stops... And, no, i CAN'T hear dog whistles! ;)

  488. FarReacher: Hmmm, Lagavulin..sounds like something to do w/the screen, 
  489.             similar to the noise on a TV screen
